Overview: Managerial Backgrounds
The managerial background tool is designed to capture a representation of every sentence in a manager's background (such as those sent to shareholders in proxy statements). This includes capturing the manager's positions (including roles and characterizations of the firms), the experiences that they are described as having, and other common information such as qualifications or professional licenses. Systematically capturing the backgrounds of managers enables analysis of:
- Changing characterizations of experiences: How a manager's prior experiences are tailored over time
- Omissions of appointments: What events or shocks cause managers to change the positions that they list
- Overall field or societal trends in the presentation of managerial experiences

Our Committee Activities tool captures a detailed representation of sentences describing the activities that the committees engage in. This includes:
